The Sacrament of Matrimony

The Sacrament of Matrimony is a divine calling—a sacred partnership in which a baptized man and woman freely vow to love one another as Christ loves the Church. Their love becomes a living sign of God’s faithfulness, a covenant sealed not just in words, but in grace. Through this sacrament, their union is blessed and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, empowering them to build a home of love, raise children in faith, and reflect God’s presence in the world. In joy and in trial, their shared life becomes a holy witness to the power of self-giving love.

  • Marriage Preparation Requirement

To help couples prepare for a joyful and grace-filled marriage, the Diocese of Charleston invites them to begin the process at least six months before their wedding date. During this time, couples will meet with their pastor and take part in a Marriage Preparation Course or Retreat—an opportunity to grow together and reflect on the beauty of this sacred vocation.
